Settling in takes some paperwork, but it does not have to be a hassle.

Kalundborg Citizen Service Centre

As a citizen in Denmark, you will need a digital login for digital self-service.

Whether you are registering with public authorities or changing your address or bank details, etc., you will use NemID to log in for digital self-service.

You can obtain a NemID by turning up in person at the Citizen Service Centre (Borgerservice), you must bring your passport and yellow health card.

Mail

To ensure that you are receiving your mail you have the names of everybody in your household on the mailbox.

What does c/o address mean?

C/O is an abbreviation of 'care of' and is a kind of registration where you do not have your name on the door, but only the owner is represented. You can only register a C/O address when you actually live on that address. The municipality may ask the owner to certify the accommodation.

Digital post

Digital post from public authorities is the same type of letters that you already receive from the authorities. Digital post includes any letters from hospital, pension statements, information about state education support (SU), changes to housing benefits, replies to applications for childcare, letters from the Danish Tax and Customs Administration (SKAT), etc.

Digital post can be accessed on either of two secure websites. They are lifeindenmark.borger.dk and e-boks.

To access your Digital post, it is necessary to log on with the digital signature, NemID, which is a single login for public websites, online banking and many other websites and services. If you do not have NemID, you can order it on nemid.nu or simply go to your local citizen service centre (Borgerservice). Please remember to bring a valid ID.

Register your new address at the National Register of Persons (Folkeregistret)

According to Danish legislation, you must register your new address no later than five days after you have changed your address. It is not possible to register a new address until four weeks ahead. If you forget to register your new address, you may receive a fine. You must register your new address online. If you have no access to the online self-service, you can be assisted by the citizen service centre (Borgerservice). Read more here lifeindenmark.borger.dk

Either you can rent council flats, or you can find accommodation, lent out by a private landlord.

Council flats and houses

The council housings are publicly funded, and they are owned by council housing associations. Contrary to private housings, all council housings are listed in this available index.

Kalundborg Municipality has signed an agreement with the council housing associations represented in Kalundborg to make it possible for newcomers to get ahead in the housing race and find accommodation. It is called: Fleksibel Udlejning.

'Fleksibel Udlejning' is an offer to students and commuters living outside the municipality who are employed for at least 30 hours a week in a company or business situated in the area of Kalundborg Municipality.

With 'Fleksibel Udlejning' you will get ahead on the waiting list. Please remember to tell the council association that you will claim the 'Fleksibel Udlejning'.

Suppose you want to rent a flat or a house in Kalundborg. In that case, you can put your name down within the housing associations in Kalundborg, but be aware that when you register with the housing associations, you must pay a fee to be on the waiting list. This fee can vary from DKK 100 to DKK 300, and it is not refundable.

Please notice that most of the associations only have Danish websites but do not hesitate to call them as they all provide their service in English

Additional nice to know info

When renting a flat, it is not always the flat comes with a refrigerator. Also, you should remember to bring lamps to your new home. It is not custom that Danish apartments or houses come with lighting.

Water supply

Kalundborg Municipality aims to ensure that the citizens have drinking water of good quality, and the municipality seeks to provide a steady water supply. Drinking water is supplied from 1 public and 62 private waterworks. In addition to this, about 240 households have their own wells.

All water from both waterworks and private wells that supply households with water  must be subjected to regular tests. To ensure a good quality of drinking water, all drinking water is analyzed regularly. Kalundborg Municipality receives a copy of the results and inspects the water quality.

Read off your electricity meter, water supply and register the new address with the supplier.

When you move, you must also read off the numbers on your electricity meter and inform your supplier that you are moving. According to the guidelines, the consumer is responsible for the electricity utilities until the date on which the agreement officially is terminated.

Furthermore, you must read off the electricity meter in your new residence and provide the supplier with your data.

Also, if relevant to you, you must read off the numbers of your gas - and water meters and provide the suppliers with the data.
